View of the rugged coastline on the Chatham Islands

Experience the Chatham Islands

Kōpī Bush Retreat is a new, purpose built, fully off-grid home set on 1200 acres of farmland and native bush that overlooks the main township of Waitangi on the beautiful Chatham Islands.

Our land

The top 300 acres of land is reserved for hunting as part of our pest control management of wild pigs and cattle. We also have a trapping program to deal with possums, rats and feral cats.

25 acres of land is covered in native bush that's over 150 years old with a walk for you to explore and enjoy the area. Among the trees you'll see are kōpī, karamu, black punga, lancewoods, mahoe, terehina, our very own Chatham Islands Christmas tree and an abundance of native ferns. You're also likely to encounter the Chatham Islands parakeet, warblers, pīwakawaka, tūī and kererū.

We can help with

  • Car hire
  • Fishing trips
  • Diving trips (must be PADI certified)
  • Day tour advice and arrangement for local attractions

Basalt Columns

One of the Islands' most popular sights is the Basalt Columns. This spectacular olivine basalt outcrop can be seen in Ohira Bay in the north-west, on private property. Lava flows from the Southern Volcanics, which erupted on land about 80 million years ago, produced the columns. The lava's cooling process led to the formation of the structures.
